When we began organizing this recall effort, we knew success was a longshot—recalls typically do not succeed in Arizona. We were determined not to let this deter us. A recall is about using the tools available to American citizens to directly engage in our democracy when it’s not working for constituents. A recall is as much about sending a message and raising awareness as it is about the hope to remove a toxic politician from public office. Ultimately, we ran out of time to collect the number of signatures needed to trigger recall, so we will not be submitting the petitions to the Secretary of State’s office. As to ‘why’ our effort failed, any number of reasons contribute: we were an entirely volunteer-run operation, with no formal support from any political party or organization; we had the luck of record-breaking summer heat; LD17 is an awkwardly large district. We began this recall spreading word about Justine Wadsack’s dangerous and hate-driven legislation. As time progressed, we shone a light on Wadsack’s increasingly erratic and extreme behavior in response to valid criticisms from her constituents and the citizens of Arizona. We will not be intimidated by a politician using her power and platform to publicly attack her detractors. This recall demonstrated exactly why it is so important Wadsack never serve as State Senator again. We entrust that LD17 will continue the hard work to ensure this.
